Editorial Day 2017: The Joint Celebration.

Weeks of meticulous planning had gone by; posters had been put up at strategic locations within the ABUAD Medical complex at Ido-Ekiti and messages had been sent to virtually every WhatsApp group chat which had an editorial board member on it. Finally, the day of celebration had come. It was the 9th day of the month of September and you could feel the anticipation in the air.

People began to trickle into the auditorium as early as 2:30pm to take their seats while some soothing music played in the background.

1
Early birds… L – R: Ireoluwatomisona Adeniyi (ABUAD), Olamide Adelugba (one of our special guests) and Oluwaseun Adelugba (ABUAD).

The programme began around 4pm with the opening prayers said by Blessing Aguda,

2
Beginning the right way… 🙏 (Blessing Aguda, ABUAD).

followed by an edifying worship session led by the editorial board’s very own media team. What better way is there to kick off than to do so by committing all things into the hands of our loving Father?

3
Paying homage to the most important person… 🙌

The welcoming remark was taken by Temitope Okuwoga who graciously welcomed the landlords (ABUAD medical students) and our brethren from EKSUTH (Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital). She expressed her sincere desire for everyone to have a great time and not miss out on any of the wonderful things the programme held. She then handed the microphone over to our able master of ceremony, Olumide Obatuyi, who anchored the rest of the program. He did not fail to recognise a distinguished personality in our midst.

4
One of our favourite doctors, Dr. Oloruntoba (Surgery SR). 👏👏👏

The stage was set for the games and presentations to begin. The floor was opened by Catherine Khanoba, with her spoken words presentation titled “True love” which spoke about how amazing it felt to be in love with Jesus and how His love is the only thing that can heal a broken heart.

5
Matters of the heart 💕… really deep stuff🤔 (Catherine Khanoba, ABUAD).

As is our custom here at CMDA-S ABUAD chapter, the audience was given an opportunity to win prizes in a test of knowledge and speed 🏃🏽💨

6
How much do you really know about CMDA-S Nigeria? 😏

Not forgetting it was a joint celebration with the editorial board of the CMDA-S EKSUTH (Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital) chapter, we had an empowering spoken word presentation by Mercy from EKSUTH, reminding us that we are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God Almighty.

Then came the time for the spelling bee which was anchored by Timi Raji.

8
Smile for the camera… 😁 (Timi Raji, ABUAD).

Let’s not forget our efficient scorekeeper for the spelling bee, Obinna Ikegwuonu.

9
Looking sharp 😎… Ikegwuonu Obinna (ABUAD).

We saw six contestants compete in a game of three levels: the beginners level (we saw a lot of smiling and dancing from the contestants), the intermediate level (we could sense a little bit of tension) and the PRO level (where contestants presented with hyperhidrosis). The contestants put in their best efforts and overall it was an exciting game (mostly on the audience part though 😏).

10
The Spelling Bee Contestants. L – R: Adeniyi Ireoluwatomisona (ABUAD), Iliyasu Kabiru (ABUAD), Umechiedo Onyinye (ABUAD), Ojo Abiola (EKSUTH), Uyoh Edemekong (ABUAD) and Igbokwe Elsie (ABUAD).

Then came the climax of the spoken words presentations, a work titled “I Have a Confession to Make”, authored by David Bowden and presented by Chibuike Franklin. The heart-warming presentation spoke volumes to the church. It was a call to confess our sins to our Father who is always listening; to lay our burdens on the altar and receive with open arms his eternal love which he graciously pours out to us.

11
I have a confession to make; there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus… and that goes for the gossip as well as the alcoholic… 🙌 🙌 🙌 (Chibuike Franklin, ABUAD).

Finally, it was time to hear from the walking medical encyclopaedias 📚. Seven of the brightest minds in Ekiti were gathered in one place to participate in a competition exclusive to the medical profession – The Medico-Gospel Challenge. The medico-gospel challenge is all about the application of medicine in the analysis of biblical case studies. The participants were selected from both medical schools (ABUAD and EKSUTH), each of them super saturated and resonant on percussion.

The medico-gospel challenge consisted of four rounds with each contestant given about two minutes to speak and they were judged based on their appearance, content and expression.

Points raised by the contestants during the course of the challenge left the audience amazed and the judges speechless.

12
The Incorruptible Panel of Judges. L – R: Ude Chinemerem (ABUAD), Oluyi Adedayo (EKSUTH), Adebanjo Isaac (ABUAD) and Oguntoye Timi (ABUAD).

The ABUAD Medical Chapel (AMC) Drama Unit also showed their support for the CMDA-S ABUAD chapter through a short play titled, “The Depth of Words”, which happened to be the theme of the celebration. The play focused on the importances of words. Words have the ability to make or mar a person.

13
Our favourite twins… Taiwo and Kehinde. L – R: Ighodaro Osasumwen (ABUAD) and Iwedi Chikesilim (ABUAD).

It’s not just the words spoken to us by other people that have the ability to hurt us. The things we say to or about ourselves also go a long way to influence our lives.

14
“Don’t say that! You are not a failure!” L – R: Samuel Apeh (ABUAD), Ohiochioya ‘Ohis’ Dan-Ugbomoiko (ABUAD) and Peace Ehizibue (ABUAD).

You determine how you react to what people say about you. You can either let their words hurt you and pull you down, or you could choose to take it as constructive criticism.

15
AMC Drama Unit Members. L – R: Chikesilim Iwedi (ABUAD), Glory Udom (ABUAD), Samuel Apeh (ABUAD), Kennedy Obiekwe (ABUAD) and Osasumwen Ighodaro (ABUAD).

The play was so captivating, some of our audience couldn’t resist the urge to draw closer for a clearer view.

16
He just had to find the right angle… 😁.

As our motto says, we truly care for the whole man (Spirit, Soul and… body 😁😁😁).

17
Nothing makes you smile like food😁… (Hungry children😂).

The message which was also titled “The Depth of Words” followed immediately after the AMC Drama Unit’s presentation and it was delivered by Blessing Ibe, the Editor-in-Chief of the host CMDA-S chapter.

18
The Boss 🙌: Author of “Ladders” and “All About the Scars” (Blessing Ibe, Editor-in-Chief CMDA-S ABUAD Chapter 2017).

She went ahead to buttress the points raised in the short play. She stressed the importance of minding not just what you say, but how, when, where and to whom you say it. As Christians, we are called to love one another. Thus, we ought to treat each other with consideration. Be quick to listen and slow to speak.

After the message, the names of the winners in the different games were announced and the prizes awarded.

For the spelling bee, the third place went to Elsie Igbokwe (ABUAD), second place – Edemekong Uyoh (ABUAD) and first place – Ireoluwatomisona Adeniyi (ABUAD).

  1. Wow!!! It was really a day full of fun.
At first, I thought it would be an all stressful day ‘cos of the long unending lectures by one of our favourite lecturers.
For the first time in a long while , I stayed in a meeting for over 3 hours without any boring moment.
Head knocks to Timi who did not allow me participate in the spelling bee. Though, I thank God I did not at last.
The words especially at the PRO level were HARD o.

When I heard a word like BORBORYGMI, I though they said BOBRISKY.
    SUCH ME!
Thank God for editorial unit of both chapters .
